The Water Treatment Plant is capable of producing water at a rate of 600 gallons per minute. Treatment at the plant consists of iron removal, filtering, softening, as well as the addition of chlorine, phosphate and fluoride. El Paso has received commendation from the Illinois Department of Health for the last seven consecutive years, because of achieving the highest standard of compliance possible in our fluoridation program.
Water for the system is obtained from wells. Two of these wells are located at the Water Treatment Plant (301 West Front Street). A third well is located at the corner of Third & Central Streets. The fourth and newest of these wells is located on Eighth Street along the walking trail, and it was completed in the fall of 2001. The oldest well has been serving the City since approximately 1882. Water is
transported around the City through a network of water mains ranging in size from 4" to 12" in diameter. The mains range in age from those which were installed in 2002 to some which were installed in 1896 (they are still in use today).
The system has two water towers which hold 250,000
gallons of water each. The north tower near EPHS was built in 1980 and replaced El Paso's first steel water tower, which was used until the 1980 water tower completion. The old tower was completed in 1896 after being moved here from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, where it had been in use. The new south tower was put into service in 2001.
